It is estimated that about three out of four women have or will experience thrush (also known as ‘candidiasis’) at some point during their lives. Thrush infections in men, while not as common, can still occur and will typically affect the head of the penis and the foreskin.

Candidiasis is a yeast infection caused by overgrowth of the Candida albicans fungus, which generally lives unobtrusively among the gut flora, skin and mucous membranes of the mouth, genitals and rectum in healthy individuals. While it is normally kept in check by the presence of other microorganisms, Candida can become a problem when there is an imbalance in normal levels of microflora, allowing it to proliferate and spread forward to the vagina. Symptoms

General thrush symptoms are similar for men and women and include itchiness, soreness and redness around the vagina and vulva or the head of the penis, irritation, a burning sensation when passing urine, a thick, white or creamy discharge from the vagina (which often may smell of yeast) or a thick, lumpy discharge from under the foreskin, and pain or discomfort during sex.
