Avoid Prepacked Bread and Rolls

Bread plastic waste header

Just look along the shelves of the bread aisle… Loaves, rolls, crumpets, muffins, bagels and wraps are all packaged in plastic….!!!

FACT: Approximately 252,000 tonnes of plastic waste is disposed of in New Zealand landfills each year.

What Can I Do…??

Choose to refuse bread products that come wrapped in plastic. This is getting easier as most supermarkets have in store bakeries with ‘naked’ loaves, rolls and pastries. Take your own bread bag or container and fill with your favourite loaf or rolls.

Lots of the in-store bakeries also offer paper bags, so if you forget your own, these are a more eco friendly option. You can reuse them in lunchboxes (they make great sandwich bags), recycle them, or shred them and add to your compost or worm farm.

There are plenty of artisan bakeries popping up now too which are offering sour dough and fermented loaves. These are much easier for us to digest and they taste great….!! Most of these local businesses offer packaging free loaves, so if your budget allows, give them a try!!

Go the Extra Mile

Bake your own…!! Homemade bread tastes amazing like this ciabatta recipe which is one of my faves. Plus, it’s cheaper and better for you than store bought bread. I pledged last year to avoid buying bread in any kind of plastic and I’ve done it; a whole year of avoiding bread bags…!!

I bake all my own bread (apart from the occasional treat of a sour dough loaf) and purchase loose rolls for school lunches using my produce bags or a paper bag. If I’m really organised, I bake rolls too using this fantastic overnight roll recipe shared with me last year by one of our Facebook community.
